24th Annual PWS International Exhibition
September 21 - November 23, 2003

Juror's Statements

It was a pleasure to jury the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society's 24th Annual International Exhibition. The high quality of work submitted was impressive. I had a good variety of art work to choose from and while I tried to be objective, I realized that in jurying an exhibition, I had to rely on my own instinct in the final decision making process. Among the entries I found strong designing, an understanding of the medium, and an endless variety of styles. All were imaginative. Many had messages and isn't that what art is all about?

Thank you for having me as your juror. It was fun.

Maxine Masterfield, AWS: Jurror of Selection

Thanks to Maxine Masterfield, who was juror for Selection, this exhibition is of exceptional high quality, broad range, and sensitivity.

In making the awards, I looked for paintings with impact, vitality, and imagination --particularly those with a vision and a personal passion.

I express my sincere appreciation to all the artists for their fine works and special congratulations to the prize winners.

Nessa Grainger, AWS: Juror of Awards

Pennsylvania Watercolor Society Statement

It is always exciting to see the variety of subjects as the Board previews the entry slides before shipping them to the Juror of Selection. The diversity of techniques, colorations, and personal creativity is evident throughout the show. Our Society sincerely thanks our Jurors, Maxine and Nessa, for their professional expertise. Huge thanks also go to Lisa Tremper Hanover and her staff at the Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art for their hard work and dedication to make this exhibition a complete success. Enjoy!

Lyn Marsh, 2nd Vice President & Exhibition Chairperson

Philip & Muriel Berman Museum of Art Statement

The Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College is delighted to host the 24th Annual Pennsylvania Watercolor Society International Juried Exhibition to kick off the Fall 2003 season. The Berman Museum of Art has enjoyed long-standing collaborations with several organizations that bring together artists and the very beest of their accomplishments and the watercolor medium, in particular, resonates with our audience. We are pleased to showcase the compositions of 100 artists selected by juror Maxine Masterfield, AWS and celebrate those works selected for distinguished recognition by Nessa Grainger, AWS.

There is a rich diversity of representational and abstract work, tight renderings and fre-flowing brushwork, and a tapestry of color that infuses our galleries with energy. We congratulate all of the artists participating in this installation and extend our thanks to the leadership of Pennsylvania Watercolor Society for their professional and entusiastic oversight of the process.

Lisa Tremper Hanover, Director, Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College
